The Russian standard for data erasure GOST R 50739-95 (russian: ГОСТ P 50739-95) is used by some programs for safe data erasure. It makes it possible to overwrite existing information on a hard disk or another storage medium by means of software. The data erasure standard GOST R 50739-95 is frequently referred to as GOST p50739-95.
The GOST R 50739-95 method for secure data erasure is generally implemented in one of the following two ways:
Pass 1: Overwriting the data with a zero;
Pass 2: Overwriting the data with a random character.
Pass 1: Overwriting the data with a random character.
After a hard disk has been erased by the GOST R 50739-95 method, a soft- or hardware-based restoration of data usually fails. The GOST standard was originally designed to protect against unauthorized access to information.
